The Fourth of July

I LOVE the Fourth of July. It's definitely one of my absolutely favorite holidays. Our weekend thus far has been pretty fun! Here's what we did...

Yesterday we woke up and had a slow and easy morning. Brock went to work at 2pm, and by work I mean Wrigley Field!! He even has the all-access press pass to prove it! :) Basically, his job was to go into the players' locker room after the game and hold a microphone up to them to get sound bits. He said it was amazing! Getting to stand right next to all the Cubs' star players, inside their clubhouse, seeing some of them naked?!? Who gets to do that?! Crazy stuff! :)

After Brock got home we made some dinner (chicken fettucini alfredo...mmm!) and headed to Grant Park to watch FIREWORKS! But wait, you ask, wasn't yesterday the third of July? Not the fourth? To which I would say: indeed it was! But get this: all the workers in Chicago are unionized, so if the city makes them work on a holiday (to run the fireworks show, traffic, security, etc) they have to pay everybody double! So they dodge out of this by holding pyrotechnic festivities on the third! Pretty funny, huh? I guess anything you can do to save a dime in this economy helps :)

Anyway, Grant Park was MADNESS! There was, literally, a million people there. Of course, they were all spread out over a few square miles (not just Grant Park) but still, you get the idea. It looked like a scene out of "War of the Worlds" where everybody is trying to flee the aliens by leaving the city on foot. They completely closed off Michigan Avenue for foot traffic, and a ton of people just rode bikes (including us). Riding over to the park, we felt like we were in the flippin' Tour de France!

The fireworks show started at 9pm, and let me tell ya, Chicago knows how to put on a show. Brock and I settled on a big hill across from the Field Museum which offered a great view. The other great thing was that the sound of the fireworks would hit the Field Museum and then echo back towards us...so it was like extreme surround sound! It was so much fun :) Every time I see fireworks, I'm amazed by the different colors, shapes, sizes and even designs (i.e. happy faces) that can be created from them.

That brings us to today. Honestly, today hasn't been too much fun lol. But I guess it's okay since we sorta celebrated yesterday. Brock went into work at 2:00 and won't get home till 10 :( Not gonna lie, that sucks. I guess it follows Murphy's Law that Brock's internship is with the only place that doesn't shut down for the Fourth: a news station.

We did, however, do something fun this morning...Transformers 2! It wasn't as good as the first one, but hey...it's Transformers. There's not much to complain about! Although I do wish Megan Fox could ugly herself up a bit. No female deserves to ooze that much sex!

After the movie we grabbed a sweet treat at the Corner Bakery Cafe, and then parted ways. I went and moseyed around Borders for a couple hours. In National Geographic magazine, I read about this entire civilization that I'd never even heard of before! Angkor Wat. It was this hugely successful kingdom in Cambodia during the 9th-13th centuries known for its mastery of irrigation. They were basically able to make the best of the monsoon season no matter what--whether there was too much rain or not enough. Amazing. I love reading about ancient civilizations and learning about what made them great, why they fell, what they believed, how they lived. If it wasn't such a useless major, I would totally major in anthropology.
